HISTORY OF IOLITE STONE
Iolite, or cordierite, is a stone belonging to the silicate family. It contains high proportions of magnesium, silicate, and aluminum. It is a photoreactive rock that cannot be dissolved in water or acid and is fire-resistant. Although its appearance to the naked eye seems to be generally purple, vitreous flashes can be observed in blue and yellow light with optical equipment. The largest cut natural crystal can be seen at the British Museum. It weighs 855 carats.

Iolite owes its name to the Greek word “ios,” meaning violet, which refers to its intense color. It was first used by the Vikings. According to legend, the famous explorer Ragnar Lodbrok used it as a filter to see sunlight when the weather was overcast.
