History of Charoite Stone:
Located in a single area of Russia, charoite is considered a rare stone. It takes its name from the Chara River, located in the Alban Massif in Russia, a group of reliefs with an average height of 800 to 1,000 m. The word "chary" means "charm" or "magic" in Russian. Discovered in 1947, this stone from the silicate group was only described and disseminated much later, in 1978. It can be found in the metasomatic rocks of the massif, which form at an average temperature of 200 to 250 degrees. The color of charoite stone comes in several shades, from purple to lilac, including brown. The discovery of charoite is rather recent that we do not yet have any specific stories.
This stone is very attractive thanks to its pretty mauve color, however, it remains rare given the limitation of its exploitation. Especially since the only Russian area where it is located, in Siberia, remains difficult to access and considerably limits its exploitation. The etymology of the name charoite, the latter being pronounced tcharoïte, comes from the Chara River, in the Republic of Sakha, in Siberian land. The discovery of the stone dates back to the 1940s, however, it was only described and analyzed around 1978. Its exploitation remains very limited, however, since it is located in a location that is difficult to access, more precisely in one of the most hostile environments on Earth. The discovery, let's say, recent and the rarity of the stone mean that there is no historical trace or mention of any use of charoite. Currently, the stone, in its raw form, arouses a lot of enthusiasm among collectors around the world for its very singular colors. In the jewelry sector, it is considered a fine stone, most of the time cut into cabochons or sculpted to create various decorative and ornamental items.
In the mid-1970s, Yuri Rogov, a Russian geologist, arrived in Paris for a professional consultation. This event was quite unusual: Rogov specialized in the exploitation of uranium reserves, which made his travels outside the USSR nearly impossible. However, he obtained permission to leave the country, as well as to communicate with all his French counterparts at the Mineralogical Museum, whose collection was considered the most comprehensive in the world. The Russian geologist showed a purple plaque to the numerous French experts and asked them to identify the mineral. Unfortunately, no one had the correct answer: the stone was still unknown.
Origin and composition of charoite stone:
Charoite stone (pronounced tcharoïte) is a mineral from the silicate group, subgroup of inosilicates, code K5Ca8 (Si6O15) 2 (Si2O7) Si4O9 (OH) 3 (H2O). It also has some traces of Fe, Al, Mn, Ba and Sr. Charoite is a flat mineral that belongs to the large family of silicates, having traces of metals such as barium, aluminum, iron and manganese. Associated with several elements such as potassium or carbon, it forms in limestone massifs, at high temperatures of 200 to 250 degrees. The color of the stone can vary between purple, lilac and brown. It has a monoclinic crystal code, a white streak, as well as a vitreous or even pearly luster in some cases. As for its density, it is 2.54 to 2.58; its hardness is 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale.
Deposits of the stone are extremely rare, with the most well-known site being in Siberia, not far from Lake Baikal.
