Classified as a cyclosilicate, it belongs to the beryl family, from the ancient Greek word "beryllos," meaning "blue-green stone," because of its superb hue, which ranges from transparent azure to lagoon blue depending on the oxidation of the iron it contains. This prestigious category of gemstones, to which aquamarine belongs (and which is valued according to weight, dimensions, grade, carats, etc.), includes highly prized mineral varieties such as colorless goshenite, pink morganite, yellow heliodor, bixbite, and emerald green.

Rated at approximately 7.5 on a hardness scale of 10, aquamarine is sometimes speckled with mineral inclusions and comes in several shades, from translucent and very light to lagoon blue, the most sought-after hue, obtained through various processes (heating, neutron irradiation, or gamma ray irradiation). A minor constituent of granitic and pegmatic rocks, aquamarine is found in alluvial deposits, where it is often accompanied by other minerals, including some of its own kind: lepidolite, spessardite, morganite, and heliodor. During extraction, it sometimes appears as large crystals, but more often it takes the form of opaque, gray, and unsightly minerals, of low weight and thus far removed from the appearance of the gemstone.
